GALATEA RESURRECTS' 2016 RECOMMENDED PUBLISHERS

Galatea Resurrects’ 2016 List of Poetry Recommendations will be released in the first week of 2017. But we wanted to present a separate list of the publishers, partly to highlight their variety. When self-publishers make it to the same list as a university press or Copper Canyon Press, the nature of Poetry is revealed.

Galatea expresses its gratitude to the following publishers whose works were recommended by our poet-critics. Most publishers had only one book cited (reflecting, too, our critics’ varied tastes); very few had books recommended more than once (you’ll see the number of titles recommended in a parenthetical following their name). The variety alone indicates that even one mention already is a testament to the good work being done by the mentioned publisher. The most cited publisher was New Directions. But the most important conclusion from this list is the large number of publishers—and small or independent or even one-person presses—publishing quality poetry.

While a list by Galatea’s poet-critics is sure to display Poetry’s wide expanse, the list is naturally incomplete. The point is that the committed poetry reader would do well to explore…
